「おおいぬ座」はいつ頃から「おおいぬ座」になったのでしょうか？
この星座名の起源はよく分かっていないようですが，おおいぬ座のアルファ星シリウスがthe Dogと呼ばれ，これがいつの間にか星座の名前になったという説があり，かなり説得力があります．
昨日触れたこいぬ座は，古代メソポタミアに遡ることができます．こいぬ座に相当する古代メソポタミア・アッカド語Shelebu，同シュメール語KA.Aは，共にthe Foxの意味．

と調べてみても，私の力では見つかりません．頼みのthe Theoi Projectのサイトは，アッカド語，シュメール語がある場合には併記してあるのですが，おおいぬ座には何もありません．ラテン語とギリシャ語のみ．共に犬．

Sirius
最も明るいStar，14世紀後半ラテン語Sirius "the Dog Star"から．先立つギリシャ語はSeirios．この語は「焼け付くような（scorching）」または，「焦がすもの（the scorcher）．Siriusを意味するといわれてきました．
しかし，他の関連したギリシャ語は，この使い方（訳註 シリウスをSeiriosと呼んだ事）に由来しているように見え
（訳註 シリウスが焼け付くような明るさを持っているため，同様の性質を”シリウスのような”として表したようにみえる），
星の名前は，人々が他の言語から借りてきて用いた名前かもしれません．
古代エジプトでは，名前はSothis．
Beeksは，もしも，この星のもとの名前が，（一般いわれているように） "sparkling, flickering."であるのなら，それはPIE root（インド・ヨーロッパ祖語の語根)の*twei- "to agitate, shake, toss; excite; sparkle" 由来としています．
この星と，焼け付くような熱とを結びつけるのは，夏至の時，水平線に昇ることに由来します（dog days 参照）．関連語Sirian.

The connection of the star with scorching heat is from its ancient heliacal rising at the summer solstice (see dog days). Related: Sirian. The constellation Canis Major seems to have grown from the star, not the other way.
Homer made much of it as [Kyōn], but his Dog doubtless was limited to the star Sirius, as among the ancients generally till, at some unknown date, the constellation was formed as we have it, -- indeed till long afterwards, for we find many allusions to the Dog in which we are uncertain whether the constellation or its lucida is referred to.
